Preparing Your Clay
Roll out a:
1/4” thick slab for tree ornaments and/or 1” thick slab for stand alone trees.
The texture sheets may be used to create interesting patterns on the clay. Gently press the texture sheet into the clay with finger tips to make an imprint.
Step 1:
Tree Shape
Cover the slab of clay with plastic wrap. Firmly press down the tree cutter into the clay. Gently remove the excess clay from around the tree shape.
Cut out the desired amount of tree ornaments or stand alone trees.
Step 2:
Smooth
Use a metal rib tool to smooth out any rough edges.
Step 3:
Hook
Use the end of a drinking straw to cut an opening to insert the ornament’s hook. Leave solid for the stand alone tree.
Step 4:
Trunk
Gently indent the flat ended tool under the tree’s needles to form the tree’s trunk.
Step 5:
Decorations
Embellish the tree with trimmings. Score and slip pieces on top of the tree shape. Add some extra clay on the top of the tree to create a star or a snow.
LEARN: This is called scoring and slipping. Scoring is scratching the edges of clay before joining them together. Slip is liquid clay used to join pieces of clay together like glue. You can make slip by mixing water and clay together in a dish. Do this scoring technique on all the parts that are put together. This will help keep the pieces from falling apart later when they dry.
Step 6:
Balance
Turn the stand up tree upward and wiggle it back and forth until it stands up on its own. Leave it standing during the drying process.
Step 7:
Dry
Allow the clay to dry for 24 hours before painting.
Step 8:
Paint
Paint the tree and decorations.
Step 9:
String
Insert the string into the hole at the top of the tree ornaments and knot the ends together.
